Snakes
Snakes are the world's most exciting and interesting pets. They are quiet, unobtrusive and do not demand attention. They are relatively hardy, clean, odor-less and easy to maintain. Best of all, they do not transport diseases that can affect humans.
Housing
Snake can be kept in a glass aquarium with a wire lid on top. A suitable snake cage should provide:
They need a few branches for climbing. Manzanita or Mangrove roots are excellent climbing ornaments because they are made of hardwood and do not easily contaminate or infest with parasites like ticks or mites. Some snakes also need a cave or an enclosure to conceal them. Wood shavings (cedar shaving are not recommended), Spanish moss, dry leaves and gravel are used for covering a snake's aquarium floor. A FLUKER'S HEAT PAD should be used on the bottom of the cage. A light bulb should be mounted on the top the tank to provide a source for heating the top part of the snake. A full spectrum light bulb like VITA LITE is necessary for the Snake to prevent Vitamin D deficiency. Care should be taken to prevent ingestion of rough indigestible objects along with the food. If rough materials are being used as floor covering, the snake should be fed in another bare-floored cage. A rough stone serves chiefly as an aid to loosening the skin when it is ready to shed.
Food
As a rule, snake should have food once every week. They should not be over fed. Food should be appropriate to the size of the snake. Rodents are widely available but Gerbils are usually avoided. Some captive raised snakes may be fed on frozen food. A young snake needs extra quantities of calcium and phosphorous for bone building. Vitamin C also should be given to avoid skin infection.
Water
Water should be provided for drinking and bathing. Most snakes need to soak their bodies in water before shedding. This provides a great opportunity for supplying the snake their vitamin. We recommend Nekton Rep or Nekton Rep color Vitamin products.
Temperature
75 to 85 degrees F. If kept cool during the winter at a temperature of 40 to 50 degrees F. They should be covered and not fed.
