Birds maybe ideal for people who may not have a lot of time to spend with their pets.  Finches for example will suit the bill.  They need a nice large cage to fly around in.  Most make nice sounds.

Handfed, and larger birds, such as Lovebirds, Cockatiels, and Parrots definitely need more attention to be happy.  The most important thing is to establish a consistent routine for your birds.  Giving more time one day, and less the next is not a good ideal for these types of birds.

Birds can be messy, but there are many new cages, such as the Hagen Brand Vision cages, that make it much easier to keep many varieties of birds with much less mess
